The IGP Dr. George Akufo Dampare has emphasized the need for the Police and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to work together towards the peace of the country.
The IGP made the call when the service met with CSOs as part of its stakeholder engagements at the National Police Headquarters on November 3, 2021.
Contained in his closing remarks, Dr. Dampare used the opportunity to call on the CSOs to speak up on issues affecting the security of the country, while urging them to offer constructive criticism to the police.
He also assured that the Police Administration was focused and determined to deliver on its constitutional mandate.
The stakeholder engagement was to afford the Police Administration the opportunity to listen to the concerns of Civil Society Organisations about policing in the country.
The meeting focused largely on the shortcomings of the Police institution and other problems affecting policing in Ghana.
Some of the issues considered during the meeting bothered on calls for enhanced community engagement, civility of the Police, and human rights issues in policing across the country. Issues of election security and bribery and corruption have also been raised and discussed earnestly at the meeting.
Another issues which were considered as grave concerns by the CSOs have to do with what they described as selective application of the law, abuse of traffic regulations by V8 drivers and motorbike riders, as well as Police- Military operations during demonstrations.
In attendance of the meeting was the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare who was the chairman of the meeting. Prof Kwasi Anning happened to be the moderator of the meeting. Members of the Police Management Board and Senior Staff were present at the meeting.
