Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has hinted of raising transport fares on Monday October 25, 2021.

The proportion at which the increase will be implemented is yet unknown, but according to the Union, it will be as a result of the increase in fuel prices.

Alhaji Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU’s Accra chapter, said they had talked with the Transport Ministry about the matter and that the only thing left for them to do now is raise the fares by next week.

“I don’t want to preempt anything since there could be another increase soon,” he said, referring to the rate at which our fuel prices have risen.

The Union has previously warned that if the current pattern of rising gasoline prices continues, it would be forced to consider raising transportation rates.

The Union stated that the last increases in transport fares were planned to run until December 2021, but given the rate at which fuel products are being increased arbitrarily, they may be forced to increase it sooner.

A litre of fuel costs GH6.80 at some oumps as of Sunday, October 17, a situation that has many Ghanaians worried.

GPRTU on June 5, 2021 increased fares by 13%, sparking hike in prices of food and services across the country.

In a press statement, GPRTU revealed that the increase is to accommodate the increase in fuel prices announced in May 2021, after long negotiations with stakeholders.
