President for National Graduate Teachers Association of Ghana (NAGRAT) Angel Cabonu described No Ghana Card No Salary as announced by Controller and Accountant General Department as “very displeasing”.

Mr. Cabonu insisted the announcement by the Controller appeared to be forcing and threatening workers with the initiative.

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department in a press statement released on October 12, 2021 said all Government workers without Ghana Cards will not be paid from December 1, 2021.

This it said forms part of ongoing measures to harmonise its systems and to facilitate biometric and unique identification of all workers on the government payroll.

However, the NAGRAT President considered the policy as one that is targeted to punish workers.

He asked “If you want to do national identification card, why should I be punished for work that I did?”

Government cannot compel me through threat to register for national identity card” he said.

He noted that, the same modus was employed by government in the past when Ezwitch card was being introduced, where all workers were ‘forced’ to register for the card.

It is something they always do, Mr. Cabonu emphasized.

He explained that all workers have unique staff Identity card that is registered into the national data base, wondering why government would compel them to do another card.

I am not against national identity card but the way they are going about it is wrong. They should stop threatening us”.
