A security expert Adib Saani says newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akufo Dampare has so far justified his position as the head of the Ghana Police Service.

Mr. Saani described as incredible and consistent, Dr. Dampare’s performance since his appointment as Acting IGP until his confirmation.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Mynewsafric.com, he told Hajar Diko Osman that “for some of us within the security space it’s not surprising because when he was appointed someone like myself has been vociferous expressing my delight about his appointment and I had so much confident in him”.

On a scale of 1 to 10, Mr. Saani said he will rate the performance of the IGPI 8 out of 10 points.

“I will give him 8, on the scale of 1 to 10”, he said with emphasis.

The Inspector General of Police Dr. Dampare has been enjoying some accolades among the public, especially base on some bold decisions that led to the arrest of some individuals who hitherto, used to be ‘untouchable’.

Notable arrest he superintended in recent would be top Ghanaian celebrities like Shatta Wale, Medikal, Jesus Ahoufe and Kofi Sasa who converted the highway at a traffic intersection in Accra into formula one driving track and decided to spin around and in the process, jumped the red light.

Mr. Saani believes the trajectory of the IGP “cannot be a 9-day wonder considering some of the approach he has adopted, it will go a very long way,  like introducing the horse patrolling unit, the K-9, which is in line with the International best practices”.

“Look we need to build confidence in the police and that’s exactly what he is doing oblivion of your status, if you do the wrong thing the law is going to catch up with you.” He explains

Pointing out one of the exemplary leadership efforts of the IGP, he said “The fact that he has also dispatched officers to the length and breath of the country especially the Bono Region area to curb the crime situation is quite satisfying “.

When ask if he anticipate the IGP punishing one of his own if found breaking the law, he says “ the (Dr.) Dampare  I know, even if his wife falls out on the law, no family member will call him to make it slide. “

He concluded that, he hopes he will recruit more officers considering that the Police to citizen ratio is woefully not encouraging.

He also advised that, the IGP should have a well concerted and deliberate progressive educational campaign drive in collaboration with the civil society organizations to engage, educate and get the citizenry to understand the role of the security management process to rid our communities of crime.
