Ghana’s Black Queens suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Nigeria on Wednesday in the-first leg of the African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers.

The Super Falcons emerged winners in front of a handful of fans at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, thanks to a brace from Uchenna Kanu.

Kanu who helped the Falcons peck the Queens found the back of the net with her head in the 21st minute after a successful cross from Francisca Ordega. The 24-year-old who plays her professional football with Swedish side Linköpings FC increased the scoreline again with her head in the 26th minute from a corner kick.

The Queens failed to produce a comeback having starting their best feet including Princella Adubea and Janet Egyir.

Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo’s side will look forward to staging a heroic upturn – scoring at least three unanswered goals – when Nigeria visits Ghana on Sunday for the second-leg of the qualifiers.

The 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations – which will be held in Morocco in July and August 2022 – will also serve as the qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
