Gunmen assaulted and injured Uganda’s former army chief, murdering his daughter and driver in an assassination attempt.
On Tuesday, four assailants on motorbikes opened fire on a vehicle carrying General Katumba Wamala, the minister of works and transport, in the Kampala neighborhood of Kiasasi, local television station NBS reported.
“There was a shooting involving him … he is hurt and he’s been taken to the hospital, his driver was killed,” said army spokeswoman, Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso.
Wamala’s daughter, who was in the vehicle, was also killed, according to NBS.
Katumba was seen in apparent agony outside an SUV in his light-colored trousers splashed with blood.
Meanwhile, photographs posted on social media showed gunshot holes in a car window and casings on the ground.
In recent years, numerous high-profile personalities have been assassinated or mysteriously killed in the east African country, fueling suspicions about the culprits and their intentions.
A legislator, a senior police officer, the country’s top public prosecutor, and senior Muslim leaders are among the victims.
The assassination attempt on Katumba was staged in the same capital suburb where assailants on motorbikes fired gunshots on a vehicle carrying a senior police official in 2017.
Felix Kaweesa, the police officer, was assassinated along with his bodyguard and driver.
