The National Identification Authority (NIA) officially opened its 17 regional and 275 district offices around the country on June 1, 2021.
The Authority, in a statement signed by Abudu Abdul Ganiyu, the Head of Corporate Affairs, stated that the decentralization initiative would allow the Ghana Card, and other related registration activities, to become more widely available, as well as giving the NIA nationwide recognition.
He contended that the decision to open regional and district offices was in line with the NIA’s mandate to register and issue National Identity Cards (Ghana Cards) to all Ghanaians from the time of birth until the end of time, as well as to non-residents who were lawfully resident in Ghana
Meanwhile, continuous public education and intensive sensitization in the regions and districts would commence on June 5, 2021. To start with, enrollment of 15-year-olds for the Ghana Card will be on June 5, and missing, stolen, and damaged cards would be replaced on June 6. Also, updating of personal information in the National Identity Register (NIR) will commence on June 6.
The NIA stated that it would soon make an announcement concerning the timeline for the registration of people in Ghana under the age of 15 years.
All Regional and District offices of the NIA will operate within usual business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The NIA asks that all citizens cooperate for a smoother process.
