Two lecturers at Nigeria’s University of Lagos (UNILAG) have been fired after an inquiry into allegations of sex-for-grades following a BBC Africa Eye documentary.
Both Boniface Igbeneghu and Samuel Oladipo were dismissed from their positions by the university’s governing board due to their misconduct. They were placed on indefinite hold soon after the documentary’s release in 2019.
Dr Igbeneghu was seen in the film proposing to and sexually harassing an undercover BBC reporter.
He was seen making improper comments and requests to the journalist, who was posing as a prospective student aged 17 years.
During their last encounter, the lecturer was caught physically abusing and demanding to kiss her inside his closed office. Additionally, he seemed to threaten that he would inform her mother if she was “disobedient” to him.
Allegations were also made against Dr Oladipo.
UNILAG said in a statement that it will review its sexual harassment policy.
