Reconstruction of the La General Hospital project has stalled due to issues of insurance cover for the financial arrangements, Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu told Parliament.

As part of his brief to the house, the Health Minister said, Sinosure, the company executing the project has been struggling to secure a guarantor that will allow the project to commence.

The Minister also explained that, another cause of the delay has to do with an insistence by the contractor to do an intrusive geological exploration to avoid structural problems, which affected the old building, leading to its demolition.

This followed a question filed by Member of Parliament for Dadekotopon, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, demanding to know when the actual construction work on the La General Hospital will begin.

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, cut the sod to commence construction of the La General Hospital Redevelopment Project in August 2020. He indicated that the redevelopment project has been occasioned by a report from the Ghana Health Service, which indicated that the five-storey structure of the Hospital had developed gaping cracks, which made the facility unfit for use.

Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu said some aspects of the project such as demolishing, hoarding, topographical surveying, design and other preliminary activities are already underway, pending the commencement of the physical structure, “once we have the insurance cover impediment cleared“.

And the comforting news is that, once the physical construction starts with all the right drawings and studies that are currently ongoing, there will be no breaks until completion”.

Mr Agyemang-Manu promised to update the House on further developments of the project.
