The government has presented GHS 500,000 to several trade unions in Accra’s Agbogbloshie district to assist them in transporting their wares to Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West Municipality.

The government has given GHS 300,000 to onion vendors, with the remainder divided among other dealers in the commercial enclave.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey, said this during stakeholders’ durbar at Adjen Kotoku ahead of the onion sellers’ relocation on Thursday, July 1, 2021.

The government is making GHS 500,000 available. I’d want to emphasize once more that this is for transportation to Adjen Kotoku.” the Minister stated.

The government has given onion traders in Accra a seven-week deadline to relocate from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku.

Over a decade ago, the new market was established at Adjen Kotoku in an attempt to decongest the core business center. However, that market remains abandoned.

Regional Minister Henry Quartey stated that his administration will be forced to dismantle the Agbogbloshie onion market on July 1, 2021, if the traders refused to move, even at the face of big push given them by governmet.

However, several onion vendors have petitioned the government for additional time to appropriately prepare for their transfer.

It is unjust for the Minister to require us to relocate on such short notice. We pleaded with him for further time, but he ignored us. Additionally, the booths offered are inadequate for selling onions. We have not stated that we would not relocate; rather, we are pleading for further time to put everything together,” a trader explained.
