The University of Cape Coast has conferred an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership degree, on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at a special congregation held in his honour at the University.
The award was given as a result of the President’s educational policies, particularly the Free Senior High School program. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, also stated that the President is highly qualified for the honorary degree and deserves it.
Honorary degrees honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of society in a variety of professions.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the 40th person to receive an honorary degree from the University of Cape Coast, and the second President of Ghana to do so after former President John Agyekum Kufour. Dr. Sam Jonah, the Chancellor of UCC, stated during his speech that the Free SHS program has aided many disadvantaged children who would not have attended secondary school .
“A crucial reason for our president’s selection was his remarkable, pioneering involvement in implementing the free SHS program. This policy has increased access to Senior High School and cleared the road for many young Ghanaians who would not otherwise be able to pay it. It is impossible to overstate the financial relief provided to some parents and guardians. Without a question, the free SHS policy is a daring move and one of the best social intervention measures ever implemented by any leader in this country“.
