The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) have threatened to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike. The threat according to the association, will be in support of their colleagues at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), if their demands are not met.

Medical Laboratory Scientists at the hospital began a one-week sit-down strike last week after two medical officers were transferred to the hospital’s Laboratory Services Directorate.

They demanded the decision be reversed while calling it an imposition and interference into the medical laboratory technician profession and an affront to the act that governs the profession. They have since given the hospital’s administration and the Ministry of Health a one-week ultimatum to revoke the two medical officers’ appointments or continue to witness the effects of the strike.

While the Ghana Health Services (GHS) is making attempts to resolve the impasse, notice is served by the mother body of the association to solidarize with their colleagues at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) beginning next week.

The National Public Relations Officer Dennis Adu-Gyasi said the association could no longer watch unconcerned, the imposing that is taking place at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). He therefore served a notice that if nothing is done to reverse the decision, all their members have no other options than to solidarize with members at the hospital.

We are concerned about what is happening at KATH and it is an affront to the practice of medical laboratory science in Ghana. So, if the leadership of Komfo Anokye Hospital and Ghana Health Services are not willing to heed the scientists’ appeal, we will join them next week Wednesday

“This should not be happening, they cannot continues to impose medical officers on the professionals.”

Meanwhile, the strike continues to have impact on patrons of the hospital as they call on government to intervene.
