President of IMANI Center for Policy and Education, Franklin Cudjoe has bemoaned the spate at which prices of goods and services are skyrocketing” in Ghana.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Cudjoe lamented that, “prices are just skyrocketing”.
A recent market survey conducted my Mynewsafric.com revealed a drastic increment in prices of foodstuffs in some markets within Accra.
Respondents who spoke to the team of reporters deployed to various major markets indicated that from the past three months (August to October), prices in the market have gone up between 5 to 10% on some of the commodities, while those that are imported into the country either doubled or close to half.
The market women attributed these increments to the high transport fares as a result of fluctuating hikes in fuel prices as well as what they described as “disturbing taxes”.
The IMANI President in his post prescribed to government to “make great cuts” in the 2022 budget.
“The 2022 budget must make great cuts”, he wrote.
“This battle can’t be the Lord’s” Mr. Cudjoe added.
The Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is expected to present the Budget Statement and Economic Policy of government for the 2022 financial year on Wednesday November 17, 2021.
Parliament was expected to receive the Finance Minister on November 15, 2021 for the budget presentation but Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu who announced the revised date, rather advised the MPs to commence scrutiny of the various allocations to facilitate the easy passage of the budget.
The budget among other things is expected to announce government’s anticipated revenue and expenditure in the coming year.
Beneath that, the budget will also address some specific taxes and levies which have generated public attention and allocate funds for the various Ministries, government agencies and MMDA’s for the 2022 fiscal year.
