Government will soon deploy Smart Pay Meters across the operation areas of Ghana Water Company Limited said Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

This was after the Community Water and Sanitation Authority’s (CWSA) introduction of prepaid meters dubbed ‘smart pay’ recorded success in significantly reducing water wastage at CWSA’s water points across its operating areas.

The minister hinted at her ministry’s intention to implement a pay-as-you-go system at all public stand pipes, including those of the Ghana Water Company Limited, in order to reduce, if not completely eliminate, household water waste, which has a significant impact on the country’s portable water distribution process.

The Sanitation and Water Resources Minister in her address at opening ceremony of the 32nd edition of the annual Mole Conference Series in the Ashanti Region explained that the smart meter has designed in a way that anyone who goes to the water point can fetch water according to his or her strength.

“If one has Ghc1 on his or her smart meter (a card with a microchip embossed in it) he or she will be served accordingly.

You just place your card on it, state the amount of water you want and after it has been discharged, the system will automatically shut down.” This is how the smart pay works she emphasised.

According to her, the introduction of smart pay meters aims to eliminate barriers that prevent prompt access to water at the end point, where vendors can lock out the facility and reopen it at their discretion.

She also stressed that, the new system will be easier for the Ghanaian consumer, as well as to help channel water that would have been wasted to communities who eagerly need them for domestic use.
