The former president John Dramani Mahama has called on the general public to support the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, in the fight against corruption.

Speaking in a radio interview as part of his tour of the Eastern Region on Tuesday October 12, 2021, Mr. Mahama said he is quite hopeful that the 43-year-old lawyer will live above reproach.

“If President Akufo-Addo keeps exonerating his appointees engaged in corruption, the act will never stop. The government must take steps to stem corruption in the country”.

“We have a new Special Prosecutor. Looking at how he has started his work, we are all hopeful that he will fight corruption… and all of us will support him to do his work,” Mahama told Koforidua-based Sunrise FM.

John Dramani Mahama in August this year, called on the government to resource the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate issues of corruption across the board.

He said it was imperative that the government ensured that the new SP, Mr Kissi Agyebeng, had all the necessary support, cooperation and resources to do his job and assert his independence.

“We heard of Martin Amidu’s complaint about lack of funding in terms of logistics, finance to recruit the personnel he needed to do the job, the Executive had also attempted to interfere in his job, leading to his resignation and I hope Mr Kissi Agyebeng, the young and brilliant lawyer will be given the needed support and cooperation to fight corruption across the board in the country”, he stated.

Mr. Mahama made the call in an interaction with the media during his ‘Thank You’ to the Northern Region last Thursday, to thank the chiefs and people of the region for their support for him and his National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 general election.

Mr. Mahama said the beauty of the independence of the special prosecutor was its ability to investigate corruption notwithstanding who was involved, saying, “when you take the independence away, you rob the office of its ability to fight corruption.
