Chairman of the Roads and Transport committee in Parliament Kennedy Osei Nyarko has revealed that towing services will be part of insurance packages in the revised Road Traffic Regulations.

He said the Road Traffic Regulations which is under consideration in Parliament will allow vehicle owners subscribe to the towing services from any Insurance company they want.

Vice President of IMANI-Ghana Kofi Bentil had earlier criticized the bill under consideration and said “It can never make sense to levy everybody to pay for the lawless few”.

Kofi Bentil had suggested that broken-down vehicles be towed and seized by the State till the towing and a penalty is paid by the vehicle owner otherwise the State should auction the vehicle.

But in a Facebook post on Thursday October 21, 2021, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, who is also MP for Akim Swedru in the Eastern Region explained the rationale behind the new regulation, saying it is meant to allow owners of broken vehicles to remove them from the roads with speed.

“The rationale behind this new regulation is to allow vehicle owners to tow their broken-down vehicles from our roads within an hour”.

He indicated that, statistics have shown that at least 30% of all road accidents in the country are caused by broken down or stationary vehicles on the various roads.

“This year alone we have lost over 300 precious lives as result of crashes on stationary vehicles. I believe this regulation will help save more lives on our road and also remove all hindrances caused by broken down vehicles” he added.
