President Akufo-Addo has called on members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to endorse his nominee Sam Pyne, for progress of the region instead of the threat to reject him over “past debts”.

The President Nana Addo made the call in an interview on Pure FM as part of his itinerary in the Ashanti Region where he is on a 4-day tour.

“I don’t see how they are going to hold up Kumasi from getting a proper executive because of the past. I don’t think that is fair. That is not the way to go about it.”

The assembly members in the Kumasi Metropolitan area have threatened to reject President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nominee, Samuel Pyne as the Kumasi Mayor immediately after the final list of the MMDCE nominees were announced.

They insisted that if the government fails to clear over GHS50 million debt the Assembly owes, they will not pass Sam Pyne, saying the Assembly’s indebtedness has significantly contributed to the underdevelopment of Kumasi.

Speaking to Citi News, Presiding Member for the assembly, Stephen Ofori, said the Assembly will not approve any nominee unless all their debts are cleared by the government.

But the President has called for calm and urged the assembly members to ensure Mr. Pyne shows a commitment to deal with the debt.

He explained “That will be the proper way to go. If they feel he is worthy of confirmation, let him make it clear to them that his number one item on the agenda will be how to arrange with the government to repay the debt.”

President Akufo-Addo also said the Local Government Minister was looking into the circumstance that led to the debt.

“He will prepare a brief for me in the course of time… if KMA is in debt, we have to find out how KMA couldn’t pay.”
