The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapor, has tasked officials of the three main agencies of the Ministry in the Northern Region to ensure an end to encroachment on forest reserves and public lands in the region.
He said this during a meeting with sector officials at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council on October 4, 2021 to among other things, address issues concerning their welfare.
The Minister appealed to the staff, who were mostly from the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands, Forestry, Lands and Minerals Commissions, to work with the Regional Minister and the Coordinating Council to put an end to the encroachment of the forest reserves, which was still in its early stages before it becomes a national problem like the issues of illegal mining popularly referred to as galamsey.
“The issue of forest reserve encroachment in Tamale is one that we must address, and we must address it decisively”.
“We’ve been told and it’s clear that the forest reserves in the Tamale Metropolis are being encroached upon, and we can’t allow that to happen,” he added.
The Minister also indicated that the Regional Security Council will soon draw plans to evict all encroachers from the forest reserves in order to safeguard Tamale’s long-term viability.
He noted that the Northern Regional agencies operations are critical to the Northern sector’s corporate success.
