The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Cape Coast Metropolis has called for total rejection of President Nana Addo’s apology over his “we did not promise Cape Coast a habour” comment.
According to Cape Coast South Secretary of the NDC, George Arthur, the president’s demeanor during the interview on Peace FM in which he rendered the apology, did not show someone who regretted his actions, adding that it would have been best if the President return to the region and use the same medium and platform on which he goofed.
“We will not accept the apology. The president was emphatic when he stated his position so he should come back here and apologise to people of Cape Coast. We don’t think he has shown remorse”
After his gaffe on Cape Coast-based Eagle FM on Monday, President Akufo-Addo sought to clarify his position an interview on Peace FM on Thursday October 21, 2021.
The president said “Let me confess, I made a mistake on the Cape Coast matter. Even with the mistake, we have to have a rethink. We cannot have a harbour at Takoradi, Elmina, and have another one at Cape Coast. But I have to apologize to the people of Cape Coast. Presidents are humans, and they can make mistakes”.
But the Cape Coast South Secretary of the NDC insisted the president ought to know about the promise they made to the chiefs and people of Cape Coast, specifically about Airport and Habour, adding it would be disingenuous for Nana Addo to claim now that it was landing beach instead.
“I don’t want to believe the president was in slumber when he made the comments. At the time of the Vice President Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia made the promises at the manifesto launch, he (Nana Addo) was there. So, they have promised us Airport and Harbour, all we want is to give us what they have promised” he said in an interview on Citi FM.
“He did not respect us, he should come again”
Mr. Arthur posited that President Nana Addo may have made the U-turn on their promises after they discover the number of Parliamentary seats they have lost in the Central Region, if not Cape Coast alone.
“Even after his interview on Eagle FM, he met the nananom to say that they lost the two seat in cape coast and I believe that is what may have caused them to have a change of mind” he alleged.
Let him fulfill his promises to the region and that is all we want, the Cape Coast South NDC Secretary noted.
