Ghanaians have whole-heartedly welcomed the ‘Clean Your Frontage’ initiative by the government and are willing to play their parts to make it a success.

The initiative which is under the auspices of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC), seeks to ensure that households and organizations clean and beautify their frontages to complement the government’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa as promised by the president in his 2016 election campaign promises.

Many citizens that Mynewsafric.com reporter Melody Hini-Amoako spoke to on the streets of Accra expressed joy and enthusiasm about the initiative and are ready to join hands and collaborate with the government and the personnel that will be deployed to be in charge of the initiative to ensure it becomes a success.

“I think it’s a good initiative that the government has brought up. I believe it will help to eradicate the attitude of waiting for waste management collectors to deal with our wastes in our environment. I also think the government should deploy personals who will be solely in charge of making us the citizens abide by this good initiative. I’m ready to do my part as a good citizen to ensure this initiative stays”, a lady named Sandra said.

Another person also said, “This initiative should be an everyday thing rather than being done on one particular day like the initial one which used to take place one Saturday in a month because most of us do go to church on Saturdays and our doctrines does not allow us to work on Saturdays, neither than that I’m ready to go with this initiative. And I think the government should urge all household and communities to choose a day that they can carry out the initiative to enable everyone take part in it without excuses. Dustbins should be provided at every vantage point by the government”.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, who was present at the launch, explained that the exercise seeks to train over 3,500 youth as a task force under the City Response Team to assist polish the Operation “Clean Your Frontage”. Dustbins will be provided from Ayi Mensah down to Ridge roundabout and other major roads within Accra to ensure that these towns are clean, he said.

For this initiative to be effective, it depends on we Ghanaians ourselves, when I was a kid there was a similar thing like that, that we used to call tancas (sic) (Town Council) and since then such initiative has always been around. We have a problem as citizens of the country and I believe when the laws are fully enforced, everything will work out perfectly this time round, a taxi driver said our reporter.

Launching of the initiative took place at the Independence square on Friday, October 22, 2021, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo was certain the initiative will change the mindset of the public towards the environment.
