The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev Philip Naameh, has expressed disappointment in the Nana Addo-led government, saying the President and his charges have failed Ghanaians who trusted them and renewed their mandate.
According to him, the President cannot extricate himself from the unprofessional conducts of some security officers in the recent days, adding that the country is no longer safe judging from the way security services are seemingly at the beck and call of government officials.
“It is a great pity that people who are trained, paid to protect Ghanaians have ended up in the name of loyalty to a particular party in government and are shooting and killing Ghanaians…it is not only condemnable but also criminal and must be investigated and the perpetrators duly punished,“ he said.
It would be recalled that three persons lost their lives within 48 hours in Ejura in the Ejura Sekyeredumase Municipality of the Asjanti Region. It started when social campaigner Ibrahim Mohammed was attacked and wounded, resulting to his death at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi.
Mohammed’s death sparked protests on Tuesday, June 2 2021, in Ejura leading to clashes between residents and security personnel. Two lives were lost with four people still nursing their wounds in Hospital.
Reacting to this, Most Rev Philip Naameh said “the Catholic Bishops Conference strongly condemns the shooting in Ejura. We wish it has not happened, the military should have known that they are dealing with unarmed civilians who are just expressing their frustration and pain”.
Most Reverend Naameh also described the development at Ejura as “very distasteful”.
He appealed to the 3-man committee set up by the Interior Minister Ambrose Dery to “do a diligent work to get into the bottom of who sent the military and the one who ordered for the shooting”.
