The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has received a petition calling for an investigation into the conduct of Tema West MP Carlos Ahenkorah on January 7, 2021, at the opening of the new Parliament.

According to the petition, which was delivered to the Speaker by Mensah Thompson, Executive Director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mr. Ahenkorah’s behavior at the Inauguration of the 8th Parliament, brought the dignity of the honourable House into shame.

To support its request, the petitioner cited sections 28, 29, 30(c), (g)(k) of the House Standing Orders. It went on to say that the Tema West legislator’s actions were a violation of Parliamentary privileges.

The Speaker informed ASEPA that the petition would be reviewed and appropriate action would be taken.

Mr. Bagbin emphasized the necessity of improving parliament-citizen interface and engagement through collaboration with civil society and think-tanks, as outlined in the parliament’s Corporate Strategic Plan (2020-2024).

We want to bring Parliament closer to the people, and ASEPA is in a unique position to support the 8th Parliament and assist in carrying the people along,” he stated.

The Speaker praised ASEPA’s leadership for expanding the organization to become one of the nation’s leading voices in such a short period of time.
