Government has opted to pay for the surgery to separate the conjoined twins at Greater Accra Regional Hospital at Ridge.

The announcement was made on behalf of the President Nana Addo by his Chief of Staff Mrs. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, on Monday July 5, 2021 at a short ceremony.

The procedure accoeding to surgeons at the facility would cost GH15 million in total, with GH12 million for equipment and another GH3 million for consumables.

Mrs. Osei- Opare explained that, President Akufo-Addo sees the procedure as a historic event and a chance to transmit medical knowledge hence his decision to support it.

The President regards this as a historic opportunity, one that will save lives, save families from a problem they may not be able to deal with in the future, and also build capacity for Ghana, and it is my pleasure to announce that the President has stated that all related costs, all costs of this exercise, the state is willing to take over the cost.

Mrs. Osei- Opare informed the facility managers and the surgeons that will perform the surgery on the conjoined twins that, government will ensure timely release of funds for speedy and successful operation, while asking for prayers to be said for the children.

What you [hospital] require is timely release of funds so that you have your equipment on time and everything is ensured.” I’ll beg every Ghanaian to pray for our doctors because this is a historic moment, and they don’t just need our money, but also our moral support. “They must understand that there is a nation behind them, and that nation will stand beside them, and we want you to succeed,” she added.

The Siamese twins are conjoined at the head, and the separation treatment would be the first of its type in Ghana for a case of twins conjoined at the head.

On his part, a Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Emmanuel Voado, said there was hope for a successful surgery at the health institution, especially since the surgery will be done early to avoid any complications.
