The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson has made some donations to Fisher Folks across the four Coastal regions.
This according to the minister, the donations which include bags of rice and packs of oil, was a gesture to cushion the beneficiaries “during this closed season”
She said the NPP government is a caring government that prioritizes the welfare of fisher folks hence the donation.
The Items worth over gh15,000. 00 across the Coastal regions are to cushion the burden of the Fisher Folks as they observe the one month closed season.
Presenting the donations on Wednesday (July 21, 2021) at the Usher Fort in Accra, Madam Koomson explained that government deemed it prudent to support them at the time she said the Fisher-folks are out of business. Beneficiary Fisher folks received the items with Joy and expressed their heart felt gratitude to the minister and government.
She however cautioned the fisher folks about some bad fishing practices which she said are, the dynamite, DDT and light fishing, adding that such practices are dangerous to human health.
“DDT is acts as slow poison which will kill you in distant later. Let’s stop the illegal fishing activities”.
Hon. Koomson further stressed that the aforementioned illegal fishing activities compelled the EU to place Ghana on a yellow card alert implying that Ghana is not disciplined when it comes to adhering to international standards.
In that regard, the minister expressed her willingness as demanded by some of the-Fisher folks to set up a Task Force to empower them monitor and arrest all Fisher folks who engage in the illegal fishing activities.
She said the Ministry is even ready to sign an undertaking with the Fisher-folks in order to curb the activities of illegal fishing which she maintained is tarnishing the image of the country.
Hon. Koomson symbolically also presented two Outboard motors to the Fisherfolks and assured them that the remaining 48 outboard motors as was requested by the Fisher-folks will be handed over to the Chief Fisherman on Thursday for onward presentation to them.
She also assured those fisher folks who did not write their names for the Outboard motors that arrangement is being done to facilitate additional outboard motors for them.
The Minister is expected to donate similar items to other fisher folks in coastal areas in the Greater Accra region namely Teshie, Nungua, Tema and Prampram.
