Zambian President Edgar Lungu fainted on Sunday at the country’s televised official annual event for the National Defence Forces – which was abruptly cut short as a result of the occurrence.
The 64-year-old president, who is up for re-election in August, is afflicted with the uncommon condition of achalasia. The disorder damages the oesophagus and results in hypoglycaemic attacks.
The President has previously been unwell and was hospitalized in 2015.
Mr. Lungu, who assumed office in 2015 and was re-elected in a disputed election the following year, seemed to have a dizzy spell on Sunday afternoon.
However, the first gentleman of Zambia has now recovered and is continuing to carry out his responsibilities, according to an official statement published by the presidency.
