The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is demanding that law enforcement authorities investigate and prosecute the organizers of the funeral of former Forestry Commission chairman Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie popularly known as Sir John.

Dr. Frank Ankobea, the Association’s president, stated in a press release on Monday June 7, 2021 that holding the funeral’s organizers responsible for breach of President’s directive on COVID-19 protocols will “act as a deterrence to anyone who wish to harm our nation’s public health.”

The Association expressed dissatisfaction at the complete disrespect for Covid-19 regulations during the funeral services, which were marked by a large crowd, including President Nana Akufo-Addo and his Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

This huge gathering of individuals disregarding physical separation and the restricted use of face masks happened in response to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) visit to many African nations to prepare for what appears to be a fresh increase in Covid-19 infections in Africa.

The GMA said it is astounded to witness a country which is battling to vaccinate its people, would allow such a possible super spreader event to take place and be attended by high government officials, including the President and his Vice President.

The Association therefore reminded the public of the terrible repercussions of the Covid-19 outbreak in January and February last year, which claimed many lives and placed the country’s health system under severe strain.

We should not forget that the surge was precipitated by a similar huge gathering in November and December 2020 in conjunction with political events and Christmas celebrations.
“The GMA strongly opposes such acts that contravene our protocols and have the potential to undo all progress made in the battle against Covid-19
,” Dr Ankobea stated in the statement.

The Association urged the general people to adhere to all Covid-19 norms and to abstain from mass gatherings and actions that jeopardize the country’s collective survival.

The GMA wishes to underline that Covid-19 is a real and present danger to our country and urges everyone to follow preventative precautions for everyone’s safety.”
