Three health groups, Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, Ghana Medical Association, and Council of Presidents of the Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professions will meet with members of the Parliamentary Committee on Health to discuss the ongoing strike declared by Laboratory Scientists.
On Friday, the Committee urged the striking laboratory scientists to return to work while their leadership meets with the committee to find a peaceful solution to the standoff. The National Labour Commission obtained an interlocutory order against the laboratory scientists’ strike on 28th May, 2021, and they were scheduled to start work on Monday, 31st May, 2021.
However, checks at all public health facilities show that the striking laboratory scientists have not reported to work. Dr Dennis Adu Gyasi, PRO of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, revealed that the NLC order was only received yesterday, which accounted for the absence of the laboratory scientists at various health facilities. He expressed optimism that the discussion with the Committee on Health would be successful in resolving the impasse with the GMA.
Dr. Titus Beyuo, Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, expressed disappointment with the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists’ decision to continue their strike despite attempts to resolve the issues. He stated that GMA will strive to keep what is best for Ghanaians and the health sector.
