Senegalese prisoner nicknamed ‘Escape Ace’ has been captured once again after his most recent jailbreak in Dakar last weekend.
Baye Modou Fall is said to have escaped from jail 12 times, according to local media reports.
Following his last attempt, he informed a television station that he fled due to the sluggish pace of his trial.
He also said that he would remain in Senegal until a date was established for his appearance in court.
Human rights organizations often criticize Senegal’s heavy use of pre-trial detention, which leads to jail overpopulation.
The government proposed a proposal in 2019 to utilize electronic monitoring tags in lieu of pre-trial custody, although it has not yet been implemented.
On Monday, the fugitive revealed how he smashed a ventilation grate in his cell and then rappelled down the jail wall in an interview with a private television station.
“I always knew that I could get out of the prison at any time, night or day,” Fall said.
However, a Senegalese gendarmerie spokesperson told AFP on Thursday that police had apprehended the escapee in Moussala, a village in eastern Senegal near the Mali border.
He stated that Fall will be returned to Dakar by an elite unit of gendarmes.
