As part of its working canons, the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) rekindles and stimulates relationships with its stakeholders and partners. In consonance with this blueprint, the Union paid a working visit to the Minister of Education of Ghana in Accra, yesterday June 3, 2021.
The delegation was led by the AASU Secretary General, H.E Peter Kwasi Kodjie. The Secretary General had in his company the AASU Vice President for West Africa, Varney Jersey, and some executives from the Union.
After the introduction, the leader of the delegation, H.E Peter Kwasi Kodjie expressed appreciation for the fluid relationship the two parties have enjoyed ever since he assumed general secretaryship of the Union in 2017.
The Secretary General made a brief presentation on ongoing projects the union is undertaking. Specifically, he spoke about the SDG 4 Monitoring Project which assesses the progress of the implementation of inclusive and quality education by African governments.
AASU has environmental sustainability as one of its strategic focal points, hence the Secretary General took the opportunity to highlight to the minister the ‘AASU Tree Planting Project’. This project incidentally aligns with a similar project the ministry is currently rolling out, the ‘One Tree One Student Project’.
The ‘Education Enrollment Program’, another key project of the Union monitors, encourages and gets school children back into the classroom away from hazardous and harmful activities that take children away from the classroom. This project continues to receive plaudits from the international community for its style of implementation and innovative approach.
The Secretary General also informed the Minister about an open university concept that would provide some affordable education to students and also serve as a good platform for some continuous professional training for educators and educationist who are already in the field.
The Minister welcomed these initiatives and indicated his support for the projects especially the ‘ Education Enrollment Program’. He advised that the inner cities should be factored in this all-important project.
The All-Africa Students Union reiterates its commitment to the Minister that the Union will continue to be at the forefront of students advocacy in Africa, to consolidate the gains the Union has been making since 1972.
