A weeks after the Medical Laboratory Scientists at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) declared strike over transfer of two medical officers to the hospital’s Laboratory Services Directorate, they have been asked to resume work as the national leadership promised an amicable solution to the impasse.

Medical Laboratory Scientists at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), described the transfer as an imposition and interference into the medical laboratory technician profession, after they have been notified of the arrival of the two new medical officers.

Days after KATH laboratory scientist embarked on the industrial action, its umbrella body, Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), have backed the action by threatening to announce a nationwide strike in solidarity with their colleagues at KATH.

But the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), has made a U-turn and directed that laboratory scientists at KATH should go back to the laboratory while steps are taken to resolve their ‘grievances’.

Communicating the new development at an emergency press briefing, Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists informed its members of an injunction secured by the National Labour Commission, (NLC) and their meeting with Parliamentary Committee on Health as reasons why it became necessary they call off the strike action.

The President of the association Abu Abudu Rahaman appealed to his aggrieved colleagues at KATH and other regional members who have joined the strike to remain calm and return to work.

We have taken charge of the industrial action staged by the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital chapter of the association and its related action. We have also considered the recent ruling of an Accra-based High Court and the goodwill we have received from the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and the Ministry of Health to help resolve all the issues that caused the industrial action. So, my appeal is we return to work”.
