Liberia’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) officials are on a study visit to Ghana’s Electoral Commission. The objective is to assist Liberia’s Electoral Commission, chaired by the president George Weah in appreciating and adapting biometric technology for the country’s 2023 general elections.
Additionally, as part of their considerations, the two governments considered the possibilities of resource and technology exchange.
“The research trip intended to ascertain the biometric system’s utility, the associated costs of implementation, and the feasibility of resource and technology cooperation between the two countries.”
Charlotte Osei, the former head of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, was in Liberia last year to head an ECOWAS team of information technology professionals tasked with cleaning up the country’s voter registry.
According to reports, the opposition community’s faith in the election system has been undermined by the contentious voters’ register.
The ECOWAS Election and Information Technology team was dispatched at President George Weah’s request.
