The Indian variant of the COVID-19 SARS-COV-2 virus has become prevalent in Ghana and is affecting many in the Ashanti Region.
This is according to Dr. John Amuasi, the Executive Director of Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research.
In an interview with Accra-based Joy News, he expressed worry about the development.
His worry has since been confirmed by the Head of the West Africa Center for Cell Biology and Infectious Pathogens, Professor Gordon Awendare.
The Indian variant, which is wreaking havoc in the Asian country is the fourth variant that has spawned out of the SARS-COV-2 virus, hence the name “Delta Kappa”.
It had been scientifically confirmed to be more infectious than the older variants and is affecting and killing fully vaccinated people as well, according to the Public Heal Department of England as well as the American Centre for Disease Control (CDC).
Professor Gordon Awendare, had earlier told Journalists that the Sputnik V and AstraZeneca vaccines are not effective against the Delta strain of covid-19.
However, the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service has attempted to debunk the claim, even though data shows that the variant is running rampant among those vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine as well in the UK.
