The 24th African Women’s Handball Cup of Nations began on Tuesday in Yaounde and will run from June 8 to 18 at the Yaounde Sports Palace in the Cameroonian capital.

The event caught Cameroonians off guard, since its organizers admittedly built little enthusiasm about it among the general population.

They do, however, blame the African Handball Confederation for the late arrival of the means to do so at their disposal.

Despite the severe health restrictions imposed by the continuing COVID-19 epidemic, the lack of advertising did not deter Cameroonians from attending the games.

People flocked to watch the two matches, the first of which saw the Democratic Republic of the Congo trash Nigeria 35-16.

In the second game, the host country Cameroon defeated Kenya by a score of 40-16.

If health is one of the key stakes, it should also be mentioned that the organization is the most significant.

For the first time, the competition features 12 teams, though Algeria, the twelfth, failed to appear due to the health situation on their home soil.

Overall, Tunisia will compete against Guinea, while Senegal will face Madagascar.

On the second day of the African Women’s Handball Cup of Nations, Cameroon will face Nigeria.
