The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Ga East Municipality has cautioned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal ahead of the rainy season to avoid floods.
The GA East Municipal Director of NADMO, Mr. Seth Kissi cited chocked gutters and poor drainage systems in the Ga East Municipality as some of the causes of floods.
It is for this reason that he advised the residents to change their attitudes towards waste management saying indiscriminate disposal of waste materials into drains end up chocking the drains and stifled free flow of water, which caused flooding during heavy pour.
He, however, noted that the Organisation has put in place measures to avert possible flood disaster in the region.
“The national has informed us with some measures being put in place so that in the event there is heavy rains, we can deploy those strategies”
Those measures, he said, included community sensitisation, to reiterate the need for everyone to be aware of factors that can cause flooding, particularly those along river banks.
“We are also rolling out good flood management practices, as well as providing the communities with information from the Meteorological Agency to enable them to guard against floods” he said.
“The NADMO Director General has directed all NADMO secretariats in the regions to embark on community sanitisation, just as what we are doing now, stay alert, and be well informed so that we can convey information on possible disaster to the communities” Mr. Seth Kissi said.
He said this when he organized a Disaster Reduction workshop for some residents at Abokobi-Boi in the Ga East Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
