The Accra Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has vowed to deal with Police Officers whose description could only pass for ‘criminals in uniform’.

The warning came right after five Police Officers were arrested and detained following a complaint of alleged extortion in two separate cases on 25th May 2021 during patrol duties.

Statement released by the Accra Regional Police Command detailing the two separate incidents said, on May 21, 2021, a report was received at the Kaneshie Police Station to the effect that around 2:00am, the complainant was onboard an Uber vehicle from Madina to Airport, when about five police officers who were armed and onboard an ‘Operation Calm Life’ Police Vehicle, intercepted the Uber Vehicle at UPSA road. The officers accused the complainant of being a fraudster and arrested him then forcibly made him to transfer an amount of GHS 20,000 into a Mobile money account and abandoned him to his fate.

The second incident according to the Police statement, was reported to the Achimota police station by a complainant who said at 11:23 PM on the same day, he was driving an unregistered Mercedez Benz when he was stopped by three policemen at Hatso, off the Atomic-Madina road. He told the Police that the policemen onboard an ‘Operation Calm Life Police’ Vehicle searched his car after which he was arrested on grounds of being a cyber-fraudster, escorted to Silver Star towers at Airport and forced to withdraw a sum of GHS 20,000 from his ATM for them.

But the Public Relations Officer of Accra Regional Command DSP Effia Tenge said the command will not shield any officer who hides in the uniform to perpetrate crimes against members of the community.

She added that the Command has begun an investigation into the case, with assurance to the public that they will provide further updates on the matter in due time.

The Police officers who have been arrested and detained are

  1. № 52719 G/L/CPL. Redeemer Agama
  2. № 53857 G/Const. Wishwell Odoo
  3. № 53860 G/Const. Evans Arawassi
  4. № 54250 G/Const. Lawal Agyapong
  5. № 55300 G/Const. Sena Kuvordu

The Command is assuring the public that it will not shield any Police officer who hides in the uniform to perpetrate crime against members of the community. The public is also advised to report any police misconduct for investigations.
