The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central region says it remains resolute and not perturbed by the fraud case brought against one of its MPs in the region.
The party according to the Regional Deputy Communication Officer Lawrence Kwesi Ghartey, has remained focused and poised to take back power from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“The people who are behind this court issue, have been doing this long time, even before our primaries. But we have been able to win the seat in 2020. So, they can go on, the case will not affect us in any way. If we can win in 2020, we can do same thing in 2024, we are not perturbed at all”, he said.
On Tuesday 24 May, 2021, the High Court in Cape Coast granted bail Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti Morkwa, David Vondee to the tune of two million cedis in the case where he has been accused of allegedly defrauding a company.
David Vondee according to the fact sheet, sold lands that did not belong to him to a private company called REI Ghana for an amount of 2.4 million dollars. He is accused of failing to return the money after it came to the notice of the company that the lands did not belong to him.
Although political watchers feared the court case involving the Member of Parliament may hurt the chances of NDC in 2024 elections in the region, Deputy Communication Officer Lawrence Kwesi Ghartey disagreed, saying “we don’t see this as a dent on the party in the region. The ruling was not judgmental, there was nothing there to show that he (David Vondee) should pay the money so those who are jubilating over this will be disappointed”
He explained that the MP has transacted the business with the people as an individual which has no bearing on the party, so “I find it difficult to understand those who think it will affect us. It will not at all. We worked hard during 2020 elections and we shall do same” he opined.
“As we speak, people are calling our flagbearer but I can tell you, we are solid on the grounds”
The Central Regional Communication Officer is also upbeat about the chances of his party in the next elections, noting that the party is determined to snatch even seats that are currently being occupied by the NPP.
