A total of 10 members of Economic Community of West Afrcan States (ECOWAS) are converging in Accra tomorrow Sunday 30th May, 2021. The purpose among others, is to deliberate on raging crisis in Mali and take consequential decision on the evolving security situation in Mali.

The meeting as announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, is expected to be chaired by President of Ghana Nana addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, in line with ECOWAS protocol on democracy and good governance.

The Foreign Affairs Minister noted President Akuffo Addo by this summit, is demonstrating his “unwavering commitment” to ensuring that political stability returns to Mali and the ECOWAS regions.

This will be the second time the Ghanaian President is hosting an extraordinary summit on Mali following similar one held in 2020 at the Peduase Presidential Lodge in Aburi, Eastern Region of Ghana.

The Mediator of the Malian crisis is former President of Nigeria Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

In a communique, the ECOWAS Mediator during his two days fact finding mission to Mali from 25th to 26th May, 2021, met with Vice President of the Transition Government Colonel Assimi Goita, and demanded immediate and unconditional release of the President of the Transition and the Prime Minister.

Mali’s transitional leaders were on Monday, May 24, 2021, stripped off their powers by the army.
