Villarreal defeated Manchester United in a thrilling penalty shootout in Gdansk, Poland to win the Europa League final.
In the first half, United fell down as Gerard Moreno took advantage of another shoddy set-piece defence to steer the ball past David De Gea.
It was until the 55th minute that Rashford’s scuffed volley on the edge of the box, found its way into the path of Edinson Cavani who seldom misses chances from close range, and brought the game back to its equilibrium.
As the game progressed, neither team was able to take the advantage, forcing the game into extra time, where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally made his first substitution after 100 minutes of watching his players huff and puff in front of him.
However, with penalties looming, the influx of substitutes was unable to infuse anything else into the two dull extra-time periods
All ten of the original penalty takers found the net with some brilliantly executed efforts as the scoring spree continued until finally, Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea missed the 22nd penalty, handing Villarreal the trophy for the first time in the club’s history.
Villareal’s victory mean a record fourth Europa League crown for coach Unai Emery.
