The Municipal Security Council of Nzema East on Tuesday July 7, 2021, has detained two Chinese nationals and two Ghanaians for engaging in unlawful mining in Kwakukrom, in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.
The suspects, Li Gou Hua, 40, Wei Hua Fen, 37, Gambo Akpandaa, 29, and Karim Abdulai, 28, according to the MCE, were on the site with three excavators.
Further search conducted by the municipal taskforce on the site further revealed , sixteen gallons of diesel, one water hose, one ‘changfan’ motor, and a fuel pumping motor.
The items have been confiscated while the suspects were turned over to the Regional Police Command for further investigation.
The Municipal Chief Executive has vowed to weed out both the foreigners and the locals who are engaging in illegal mining in the area, since the activities of the galamseyers continue to destroy water bodies.
The President Nana Addo has also declared his unflinching resolve to end the phenomenon, making sure that the water bodies that have hitherto, been polluted as a result of illegal mining activities, return to their clean state.
