A human coronavirus (hCoVs) and swine flu (H1N1) outbreak has been reported at Akuse Methodist Senior High Technical School in the Eastern Region’s Lower Manya Krobo Municipality.
Reports suggested that 13 students have tested positive for H1N1 and 19 tested positive for hCoVs out of 34 samples put through examination and intensive observation.
The infected pupils have now been quarantined at the school’s sickbay, which is currently overcrowded.
A source at the school raised concerns over how Ghana Health Services is taking too long to provide effective care to the affected pupils.
Human coronaviruses (hCoVs) are enveloped RNA viruses that affect humans, animals, and birds, producing both acute and chronic illnesses. They are part of the Coronaviridae family. HKU1, NL63, OC43, and 229E are four of the seven known human coronaviruses that only produce moderate coryzal disease. hCoVs are more common during the wet season.

Indications from Ghana Health Services has it that there were number of students who have been affected and have been undergoing treatment.
The Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, said affected students have been informed about the situation.
