The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said the Incumbent government is already addressing the concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the ‘March for Justice’ street protest, short of describing the effort of the NDC as fruitless.
On Tuesday, July 6, 2021, the NDC Youth Wing took to the streets of Accra to protest what they call injustices that are being witnessed under the Presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo.
The protesters on the day served two petitions to the Presidency and the Parliament respectively.
Commenting on the protest, the minister told Accra-based radio station Citi FM monitored by Mynewsafric.com, “The substance of the issues they highlighted, economic hardships, security challenges, among others, are topics that the government has previously been speaking about.”
“If you take economic challenges, the President forewarned us in March 2020 that despite the growth and gradual improvement that we were seeing, we were going to sacrifice some things to protect lives and livelihoods because we know how to bring the economy back to life, but we do not know how to bring people back to life,” he explained.
He stated that the Akufo-Addo administration has already put steps in place to revitalize Ghana’s economy, saying government has to sacrifice gains made in the first three years of its administration, to save lives
“We have reached the point that Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu predicted when reading the budget in Parliament: we will go through a difficult period of recuperation”.
He explained that things are not the same as they used to be, not only in Ghana, but all throughout the world, adding that measures are already in place to stimulate the economy.
Hundreds of NDC supporters joined the march to urge the government to address many concerns in the country, including an end to the brutalization of residents by security forces.
