Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has interdicted four Police officers for collecting Ghc5 from people who are illegally entering the country through Aflao border.
According to the report, the officials were paid as little as Ghc5 to allow visitors to enter the country using unapproved routes.
Ghana’s Eastern border is a major entering point to immigrants from the neigbouring West African countries. Apart from the main Aflao border, there are smaller and unapproved entry points that these illegal immigrants use in entering the country.
Following the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, President of the Republic Nana Akufo Addo authorized the closure of the country’s land borders.
However, an investigation at the Ghana-Togo border found that GIS officers routinely enable unlawful entry of foreigners into the nation through prohibited routes, in turns, charge these foreigners fees.
The Public Relations Officer of GIS Supt. Michael Amoako Atta, stated that immediate action was taken against some of the personnel involved, adding that after investigations are completed, some officers who are found to be culpable, will undoubtedly lose their jobs.
“No one knows what will happen after the investigations and trial; they may lose their jobs. So, I believe this should have been sufficient reason for every officer to refuse, how much do you say, ghc5 ghc10, and rather seize such persons and bring them to your commanders.”
