Veterans in the African National Congress (ANC) party have objected against the prison sentence given to South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma.
The Umkhonto Wesizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) on Wednesday objected the “entirely unjustifiable and unjust” jail term.
Zuma, 79, was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Tuesday for failing to appear before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture as directed by the court.
Zuma was sentenced to jail by the Constitutional Court, South Africa’s highest court, after he was found guilty of contempt of court.
Justice Sisi Khampepe of the Constitutional Court gave the former president five days to surrender himself to the police and be handed over for booking at a correctional facility.
The former statesman has always had the unwavering support of veterans of the ANC’s armed military wing throughout the liberation struggle.
