Two persons have been confirmed dead at Gbani in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region after a mining pit collapsed on them.

The incident according to police sources, occurred on the noon of Thursday June 17, at an area known as the Obuasi mining area, notorious spot for illegal mining activities in the Gbani enclave.

The Two persons have been identified as Wahab Mahmud aged 29 and Seidu Alhassan aged 35 who were removed from the collapsed pit by officers from the Ghana Police service with support from some locals.

Police sources disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed the deceased persons and three others went to Isaac Mensah pit for their mining activities and at about midday, a loose hanging rock fell on them leading to their instant death.

Both victims according to reports from the Tongo District Hospital after they were examined by one Dr. Benjamin Ayitah revealed that, they sustained a severe head injury and polytrauma which is the cause of death.

The bodies have since been released to the respective families for burial.

The latest incident comes a little over a fortnight after a similar incident occurred in the area living 10 illegal underground miners dead.
