Ghanaian actor and satire Kweku Sintim-Misa has expressed regret that Ghana after first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah did not progress and develop as expected.
According to the man who is also affectionately known in the entertainment industry as KSM, all the leaders who came after the overthrow of Dr. Nkrumah have inherited a lot but failed to judiciously apply the resources of the country to continue the development he started, instead, turned to the colonial masters thereby destroying the gains made through dedication and patriotism. He was speaking to Blakk Rasta, the host of the Taxi Driver Show on Zylofon 102.1 FM.
“Blakk, we have failed the youth of this country. I can tell you we have inherited a lot but we have damaged all that we needed to build upon for the next generations”, KSM said.
The actor said that during his days at the university, there was an arrangement of one student to a bed, served with breakfast and given rest hours during lectures, but quick to add that the prevailing situation at the country’s tertiary institutions can best be described as “appalling”.
“The problem is we are still under colonial rule and have subscribed to their ideologies. Can you imagine our judges and lawyers are still wearing brown wigs, we buy used clothes with bravado while running down our textile industry, tell me how we can compete with other countries that we have started with” he lamented.
But the actor cum comedian is hopeful that the youths are becoming enlightened, saying that can be seen in the recent protestation on social media by some “brave” youths who instigated a hashtag called #FixTheCountry in an attempt to sadly remind current leaders about the sorry state of the country.
“The generation coming now are not believers of the axiom “we are sick and tired”. No! they are aggressive in their demand and wanted the country put back to work. They know what they want. In fact, they are sick and tired of all the ‘sick and tired’ that we have said in our youthful age when things have started deteriorating, and that is good“, Kweku Sintim-Misa explained.
He urged the youth to remain focused and be persistent in their demands of quality governance and development to ensure that they get the future they desire. Although he is worried that partisan politics has succeeded in dividing some section of the youth, he believes things can change.
“Ghana is in their hands, the future is you, change your mindset and stop the unnecessary bickering in the name of politics and you will get the good water, the constant power supply, the good roads that you want and everything”, KSM sounded these words of caution to the youth.
