Residence of Salakope, Amutinu and Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipal Assembly have sent an SOS call to the President as they say nothing can appease them apart from Sea defence to save them from the ravaging tidal waves.
“What we want now or never is government to extend the Sea defence project to cover our area, this is non-negotiable. Because in our area around Amutinu and Salakope, the only thing that is standing between the Sea and the Aflao-Keta highway is a house” said Sylvester Kumawu, an Assemblyman for Amutinu/Salakope electoral area.
The obviously worried Assemblyman explained to Mynewsafric that if government does not expedite actions to protect the highway, it may be lost to the Sea, a situation he said will greatly have an adverse effect on the economic activities in the area since inter-trading among the adjoining communities will be halted.
Thousands of residence from three communities (Salakope, Agavedzi and Amutinu) have been displaced by Saturday’s high tidal waves, forcing them to sleep in the open.
Reports said except for the benevolence of the Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive Elliot Agbenorwu and Member of Parliament Dzifa Gomashie, affected residence would have been without any relief items. The two were reported to have given the victims foods and other items.
But with the rains about to start, Sylvester Kumawu said the issues has now assumed national nature and if central government does not intervene to secure them a temporal accommodation, the situation will be worse.
However, the Municipal Chief Executive Elliot Agbenorwu has assured that work will soon commence on the continuation of the Keta Sea defence wall to cover the affected communities.
“The Ministry of Works and Housing have responded to my letter and we are now waiting for clearance from the Ministry of Finance. I can assure them that work will soon begin. A team was dispatched from the Housing Ministry to come and assess the situation”.
“What I can do now is to make sure the affected people are safe that is why we secured some lands for them to use. Utilities are being extended to the temporal shelter community so that they can settle there for now“, the MCE told Mynewsafric.
“We are also fortifying the remaining houses with extra cement blocks to withstand the waves” he concluded.
